Biography

James Humphreys is a partner and serves as the chair of the firm’s litigation practice group. His litigation practice includes medical malpractice, insurance defense, personal injury, and professional errors and omissions defense. While maintaining an active litigation practice between Knoxville, Tennessee, and Roanoke, Virginia, Mr. Humphreys routinely serves as co-counsel in litigation with attorneys from other law firms. 

Mr. Humphreys is admitted to practice in Tennessee, Virginia, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia, and U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Eastern District of Virginia.  

Mr. Humphreys is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, a member of Virginia State Bar, former chairman of the Insurance Coverage Section of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, and as a member of the Defense Research Institute (DRI).  

Born in Abingdon, Virginia, and raised in Wise, Virginia, Mr. Humphreys practiced law in Abingdon before joining the firm in 1990. He also holds a private pilot’s license.
