Hunter, Smith & Davis, LLP Sponsors Four Scholarship Awards in the Johnson City High School Literary Management Contest
Hunter, Smith & Davis, LLP is proud to sponsor four $1,000 scholarship awards and a children’s book for Johnson City students as part of the Johnson City 150 year sesquicentennial celebration.
Johnson City high school students are participating in a literary contest that encourages young people to tell stories through words and art about the residents, places, ideas and experiences of life in Johnson City, Tennessee. A High School Literary Journal featuring creative writing and photography submitted by students will be published to commemorate the city’s culture and history building up to the Sesquicentennial Celebration Grand Finale on December 1.
Student participants are competing for a $1,000 scholarship in each of the four Literary Journal categories: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and photography. Winners will be announced by early December, based on submissions through October.
Funding by Hunter, Smith & Davis, LLP will also support the costs of publishing a children’s book titled “Through our Eyes.” The book will be illustrated by students in first through sixth grades throughout Johnson City, including public and private schools. Illustrations and commentary about Johnson City landmarks will be featured in the book.
“The scholarship funding reflects the public service commitment that members of Hunter, Smith & Davis, LLP maintain in the Tri-Cities region,” said managing partner Steve Darden. “Collectively, we have filled positions as mayor and commissioner of Johnson City, board member of the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce, fundraiser for a $25 million campaign to build the Niswonger Children’s Hospital, and more.”
“By supporting the creativity of our youth today, we increase the strength of our community leaders tomorrow,” said attorney Marcy Walker, who is also a member of the Sesquicentennial Commission and the Johnson City Board of Zoning Adjustments. Ms. Walker is a former member of the Johnson City Board of Education (1999-2007), Johnson City Commission (2007-2011), and Johnson City Planning Commission (2007-2011).
